To understand just how small Mercury is, consider these dimensions:

In fact, two moons in our solar system—Jupiter’s Ganymede and Saturn’s Titan—are physically larger in diameter than Mercury. However, Mercury remains classified as a primary planet because its massive metallic core makes it far denser than any moon.

Why Is Mercury So Dense for Its Size?

Underneath its heavily cratered, Moon-like grey crust sits an unusually massive iron core. Mercury’s metallic center accounts for roughly 85% of the planet’s total radius. For comparison, Earth’s core makes up about 55% of its radius.

The Planet That Is Literally Shrinking

Because Mercury’s metallic core is slowly cooling over billions of years, the planet is actually contracting. As the interior freezes, it shrinks, causing the outer rocky crust to buckle and crack.

Images captured by NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft revealed massive cliff-like scarps (fault lines) stretching across the surface for hundreds of miles. These geological features prove that Mercury has lost several miles in total diameter as it cools—a process that is still ongoing today.

Myth Buster: The Closest Planet Isn’t the Hottest

A common misconception is that because Mercury is the smallest and closest planet to the Sun (orbiting at just 36 million miles), it must be the hottest world in the solar system.

That title actually belongs to Venus.

Because Mercury lacks a substantial atmosphere to trap heat, it experiences the most dramatic temperature swings in the solar system:

  • Daytime Temperatures: Soar up to 800°F (430°C) — hot enough to melt lead.
  • Nighttime Temperatures: Plunge down to -290°F (-180°C) as heat radiates straight out into space.

Surprisingly, radar imaging from Earth and NASA probes confirmed that despite daytime temperatures reaching 800°F, water ice exists inside deep craters at Mercury’s poles. These crater floors sit in perpetual shadow, never seeing sunlight, allowing ice to remain preserved for billions of years.
