Eight, Nine, or Hundreds? The Shifting Definition of a Planet
Ask anyone who attended primary school before 2006, and they will confidently tell you there are nine planets. Today, the official count stands at eight. But this number isn’t fixed in stone by nature—it’s the result of how astronomers choose to classify celestial bodies.
The official solar system lineup follows a clear orbital order from the Sun outward:
- Mercury
- Venus
- Earth
- Mars
- Jupiter
- Saturn
- Uranus
- Neptune
While the list seems straightforward, the journey to settling on these eight worlds exposed a major identity crisis in modern astronomy.
The 2006 Cosmic Reclassification

For 76 years after its discovery in 1930, Pluto enjoyed full planetary status. However, during the late 1990s and early 2000s, powerful telescopes revealed that Pluto wasn’t unique. It sat inside the Kuiper Belt—a chaotic graveyard of icy rocks—surrounded by thousands of similar objects.
The tipping point arrived in 2005 when astronomers discovered Eris, an icy object in the outer solar system that was actually more massive than Pluto.
Faced with the prospect of expanding the planet list to dozens or even hundreds of worlds, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) stepped in during 2006 to establish the first formal, scientific criteria for what constitutes a “planet.”
The Three Rules Every Planet Must Obey
According to current IAU guidelines, a celestial body must meet three conditions to earn the title of a primary planet:
- It must orbit the Sun directly (ruling out moons, which orbit planets).
- It must possess enough mass for its own gravity to pull it into a round, spherical shape (ruling out irregular asteroids).
- It must have cleared the neighborhood around its orbit (it must be gravitationally dominant in its path, pushing away or absorbing smaller debris).
Pluto comfortably passed the first two tests. However, because its orbit is crowded with thousands of other Kuiper Belt objects, it failed the third rule. Consequently, Pluto was reclassified into a newly created category: dwarf planet.
Dwarf Planets: The Growing Club
Pluto wasn’t stripped of its status to be cast aside; it became the poster child for dwarf planets. As of today, the IAU recognizes five official dwarf planets, though hundreds more await confirmation:
- Ceres: Located in the main Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter.
- Pluto, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake: Located in the frozen depths of the Kuiper Belt.
The Hunt for “Planet Nine”
The count might not stay at eight forever. Caltech researchers Mike Brown and Konstantin Batygin published mathematical models showing that the extreme, tilted orbits of several distant Kuiper Belt objects are being disrupted by something large.
Calculations suggest a undiscovered giant—tentatively named Planet Nine—could be hiding in the dark outer edges of our solar system. If it exists, it is likely a super-Earth roughly five to ten times more massive than our planet, orbiting up to 20 times farther out than Neptune.
Until telescopes capture direct light from this mystery world, the cosmic scoreboard remains strictly set at eight.
