Wrestling Quiz – One of the World's Oldest Sports
Wrestling may be the oldest competitive sport in human history. Cave paintings, Egyptian tomb carvings and ancient Greek pottery all show people grappling. Almost every culture has its own form of wrestling, and today the word covers everything from Olympic competition to the theatrical world of professional sports entertainment.
Olympic wrestling comes in two styles. In Greco-Roman wrestling, competitors may only use holds above the waist, while freestyle allows attacks on the legs. Wrestling was part of the ancient Olympics from 708 BC and returned at the first modern Games in 1896. Cuba's Mijaín López set a record by winning five straight Olympic titles from 2008 to 2024.
Traditional forms of wrestling remain popular around the world. In Türkiye, the Kırkpınar oil wrestling festival near Edirne is said to be one of the oldest continuously held sporting events, with wrestlers covered in olive oil. In Japan, sumo combines sport with Shinto ritual, and Mongolia, Senegal and Switzerland have their own famous wrestling traditions.
Professional wrestling is a different world, mixing athletic skill with storytelling. WWE turned stars such as Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, The Rock and John Cena into household names, and its WrestleMania event draws huge crowds every year. In 2025, WWE's weekly show Raw moved to Netflix, and in December Cena wrestled his final match. Mexico's lucha libre is famous for masked high-flyers.
This quiz covers Olympic, traditional and professional wrestling.
