Winter Olympics Quiz – A Century of Snow and Ice
The Winter Olympics began in 1924 in Chamonix, France, with a small group of athletes competing in skiing, skating, bobsleigh and ice hockey. A century later, the Games feature more than 100 events and around 3,000 athletes, from veteran skiers to teenage snowboarders. They are held every four years, two years after the Summer Games.
Some countries have built a tradition of winter success. Norway, with its long winters and love of cross-country skiing, has topped the medal table at four straight Games, including Milano Cortina 2026, where it won 18 golds. Its skier Johannes Høsting Klæbo became the most successful Winter Olympian ever with 11 gold medals.
The Winter Olympics have also produced unforgettable moments. The 1980 Miracle on Ice, when American college players beat the Soviet hockey team, is still one of the biggest upsets in sport. Torvill and Dean's Boléro in 1984 captivated television audiences, and Jamaica's bobsleigh team in 1988 later inspired the film Cool Runnings.
New sports keep the Games fresh. Snowboarding arrived in 1998, slopestyle and big air followed, and ski mountaineering made its debut in Italy in 2026. The next Winter Games will be held in the French Alps in 2030 and in Salt Lake City in 2034.
This quiz covers history, sports, records and the latest Games.
