Vatican City Quiz – The World's Smallest Country

Vatican City is a country you can walk across in about twenty minutes. Surrounded entirely by Rome, it is the smallest independent state in the world, yet it is the spiritual center of the Roman Catholic Church and home to some of the most famous art and architecture on Earth.

The modern state was created in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between Italy and the Holy See. It has its own post office, radio station, flag and passports, and it is protected by the Pontifical Swiss Guard, a small army that has served the popes since 1506. The pope is its head of state as well as leader of the Church.

Its treasures draw millions of visitors every year. St. Peter's Basilica, built over the traditional burial place of Saint Peter, has a dome designed by Michelangelo. The Vatican Museums hold ancient sculptures such as Laocoön and His Sons, Raphael's frescoes and the Sistine Chapel, with Michelangelo's ceiling and his Last Judgment.

The Sistine Chapel is also where cardinals gather in conclave to choose a new pope. The world watches for white smoke from its chimney. In May 2025, that smoke announced the election of Leo XIV, the first pope born in the United States, after the death of Pope Francis.
