UAE Quiz – The United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates is a country on the Arabian Peninsula, made up of seven emirates along the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. In just a few decades, it has transformed from a region of small fishing and pearling towns into a global center of business, travel and tourism. Its cities are famous for record-breaking buildings and luxury, while its deserts and traditions remain proud symbols of Emirati identity.

The UAE was founded on December 2, 1971, when six emirates united under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan; Ras Al Khaimah joined the following year. The discovery of oil in the 20th century brought great wealth, which was invested in cities, infrastructure and education. Today, more than 80 percent of residents are expatriates from around the world.

Dubai is known for spectacular projects such as the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, Palm Jumeirah and huge shopping malls. Abu Dhabi, the capital, is home to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island. Other emirates offer mountains, beaches and historic forts, such as Ras Al Khaimah's Jebel Jais and Fujairah's coast.

Emirati culture values hospitality, family and tradition. Visitors are welcomed with Arabic coffee and dates, and falconry, camel racing and dhow sailing remain popular. The UAE has also aimed high in science, sending the Hope probe to Mars in 2021. Desert safaris, dune bashing and evenings in Bedouin-style camps let visitors experience the vast sands of the Empty Quarter.

This quiz covers the history, cities, culture and achievements of the UAE.
