Turkey Quiz – Türkiye, a Country on Two Continents
Türkiye, widely known in English as Turkey, is a country that connects Europe and Asia. Most of its land lies on the Anatolian peninsula in western Asia, while a smaller part, East Thrace, is in southeastern Europe. Surrounded by the Black Sea, the Aegean and the Mediterranean, it has a long coastline, high mountains and a rich mix of cultures shaped by thousands of years of history.
The land has been home to many civilizations, including the Hittites, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. Ancient cities such as Troy and Ephesus, Byzantine churches and Ottoman mosques show this layered past. The Ottoman Empire ruled large parts of Europe, Asia and Africa for centuries, with Istanbul, once called Constantinople, as its capital.
In 1923, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded the modern Republic of Türkiye and made Ankara the capital. He introduced major reforms in law, education and the alphabet. Istanbul remains the country's largest city and cultural heart, famous for the Bosphorus, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and Topkapı Palace.
Türkiye is also one of the world's most visited countries. Travelers explore the fairy chimneys and balloon flights of Cappadocia, the white terraces of Pamukkale, the beaches of Antalya and the ruins of Ephesus. Turkish cuisine is loved worldwide, from kebabs and meze to baklava, Turkish delight, tea and Turkish coffee, which UNESCO lists as intangible heritage.
This quiz covers the geography, history, landmarks and culture of Türkiye.
