The Intouchables Quiz – A Friendship That Touched the World
The Intouchables, called Intouchables in French, is a 2011 comedy-drama directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano. It tells the story of an unlikely friendship between Philippe, a wealthy man paralyzed after a paragliding accident, and Driss, a young man from the Paris suburbs who becomes his caregiver. The film mixes humor and emotion in a way that won over audiences around the world.
François Cluzet plays Philippe, a cultured aristocrat who loves classical music and fine art. Omar Sy plays Driss, who has just left prison and only applies for the job to collect a signature for his benefits. Instead of pity, Driss treats Philippe with blunt honesty and humor, and the two men slowly change each other's lives.
The film was inspired by a true story. Philippe Pozzo di Borgo, a French businessman, wrote a memoir about his friendship with his caregiver, Abdel Sellou. A documentary about the two men caught the attention of the directors, who adapted their story for the screen, adding comedy while keeping its heart.
The Intouchables became a huge hit. Around 19 million people saw it in French cinemas, and it earned more than 400 million dollars worldwide. Omar Sy won the César Award for Best Actor, and the music, including pieces by Ludovico Einaudi and songs by Earth, Wind & Fire, became famous too. Remakes followed in several countries, including The Upside in the United States.
