The Godfather Quiz β The Corleone Saga
The Godfather is often called one of the greatest films ever made. Released in 1972 and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, it tells the story of the Corleone family, a powerful Italian-American crime family in New York after World War II. Its mix of family drama, violence and tragedy set a new standard for crime films and is still studied by filmmakers today.
The film is based on Mario Puzo's bestselling 1969 novel. Marlon Brando plays Vito Corleone, the aging head of the family, while Al Pacino plays his youngest son, Michael, a war hero who wants nothing to do with the family business. Over the course of the film, Michael is slowly drawn in, until he becomes the new Godfather.
The film is full of famous scenes, from the opening wedding and the horse head in a producer's bed to the restaurant shooting and the baptism sequence at the end. Its cast also included James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, John Cazale and Talia Shire. Nino Rota's haunting music and Gordon Willis's dark, golden cinematography added to its mood.
The Godfather won Best Picture, and The Godfather Part II, released in 1974, became the first sequel to win the same award. Part II tells two stories at once: Michael's rule and the early life of young Vito, played by Robert De Niro. The Godfather Part III followed in 1990, completing the trilogy.
