Thailand Facts & Fun Facts

Thailand has changed its name

The country was officially known as Siam until 1939, when the name Thailand was adopted. The name Siam returned briefly after World War II before Thailand became the official name again in 1949.

The change is one reason older maps, books, and historical records can look surprisingly different from modern references to the same country.

Bangkok has an unusually long ceremonial name

Bangkok is the familiar English name, but the city's official ceremonial name is famously long. It contains a series of royal and religious descriptions and is recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's longest place name.

In everyday Thai usage, however, locals generally call the city Krung Thep.

Ayutthaya was once one of Asia's great cities

The ancient city of Ayutthaya was founded in 1350 and became the capital of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya.

For centuries it developed into a major international trading center, attracting merchants and diplomatic visitors from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The city was destroyed by Burmese forces in 1767.

Today, the ruins form the Historic City of Ayutthaya UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thailand has a temple unlike almost any other

Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple, is located in Chiang Rai in northern Thailand.

Unlike Thailand's ancient temples, this striking structure is a contemporary artistic project. Construction began in 1997 under Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat.

Its white exterior and intricate mirrored details give it an appearance very different from the traditional temple complexes found elsewhere in the country.

Thailand has more than one climate zone

Thailand is often associated with tropical beaches, but its geography is considerably more varied.

Northern Thailand contains mountainous terrain, the central region is dominated by the Chao Phraya basin, and the southern peninsula stretches between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

That geography helps explain why different parts of the country can have noticeably different landscapes and seasonal patterns.

The world's largest fish can be found in Thai waters

Whale sharks, the largest fish species on Earth, can be encountered in waters around Thailand.

Despite their enormous size, whale sharks are filter feeders and do not hunt large prey. Sites around the Similan Islands and Koh Tao have become known for whale shark sightings.

Thailand's national animal has an ancient connection to the country

The Asian elephant is Thailand's national animal and has played a major role in the country's history, warfare, transportation, agriculture, and cultural traditions.

The elephant also appears in Thai art, architecture, festivals, and historical symbolism.

The bridge over the River Kwai has a complicated history

The famous bridge associated with the River Kwai is connected to the Thailand–Burma Railway, constructed during World War II by Allied prisoners of war and Asian forced laborers under Japanese control.

The bridge is located in Kanchanaburi and has become a major historical site and museum destination.
