Sweden Quiz – Scandinavian Style and Nordic Nature
Sweden is the largest country in Scandinavia, stretching from the forests and lakes of the south to the Arctic wilderness of Lapland in the north. Known for its high quality of life, design, innovation and love of nature, it has given the world everything from the Nobel Prize and IKEA to ABBA and Spotify.
Sweden's history includes the Viking Age, when Norse seafarers traveled east along rivers into what is now Russia and beyond. Later, Sweden became a major European power in the 1600s. The warship Vasa, which sank in Stockholm harbor in 1628 and was raised in 1961, gives a unique glimpse of that era.
Stockholm, the capital, is built on islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. Its old town, Gamla Stan, has colorful buildings and narrow streets. Every December, the Nobel Prizes, founded by Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, are presented there. Other cities include Gothenburg on the west coast and Malmö, linked to Copenhagen by the Øresund Bridge.
Swedish culture values balance and togetherness. People take daily fika breaks with coffee and pastries, celebrate Midsummer with flower poles and songs, and honor Saint Lucia with candlelit processions in December. Writers such as Astrid Lindgren, inventors such as Anders Celsius and brands such as Volvo have made Sweden famous worldwide. In the far north, visitors see the northern lights and the Icehotel.
This quiz covers the history, culture, inventions and nature of Sweden.
Nature is central to Swedish life. Thanks to the right of public access, called allemansrätten, people can hike, swim, pick berries and camp almost anywhere, as long as they respect the land. Many families have summer cottages painted in the classic Falu red color, and the long summer days, when the sun barely sets in the north, are spent outdoors by lakes and along the coast.
