South Africa Quiz β The Rainbow Nation
South Africa sits at the southern tip of the African continent, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. It is a country of dramatic landscapes, from Table Mountain and the Drakensberg range to savannas filled with wildlife and long, beautiful coastlines. Its population is famously diverse, earning it the nickname the Rainbow Nation.
The country's history includes ancient San and Khoikhoi peoples, Bantu-speaking kingdoms such as the Zulu, and European colonization by the Dutch and British. In the 20th century, the apartheid system enforced racial segregation. After decades of resistance, apartheid ended in the early 1990s, and in 1994 Nelson Mandela became the first Black president in the country's first fully democratic election.
South Africa is unusual in having three capitals: Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein. Johannesburg, built on gold, is the largest city and economic hub. Cape Town, beneath Table Mountain, is famous for its beaches, vineyards and Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned. Durban, on the Indian Ocean, is known for surfing and Indian-influenced cuisine.
Wildlife is one of South Africa's great attractions. Kruger National Park and private reserves offer chances to see the Big Five. The Western Cape's floral kingdom contains thousands of plants found nowhere else. South Africans also love sport, especially rugby, cricket and football, and the Springboks have won the Rugby World Cup four times.
This quiz covers the geography, history, wildlife and culture of South Africa.
Food in South Africa reflects its many cultures. Braai barbecues are a national pastime, bobotie is a spiced minced-meat dish with Cape Malay roots, and bunny chow, a hollowed-out loaf filled with curry, comes from Durban's Indian community. Biltong, dried cured meat, is a favorite snack, and the Western Cape's vineyards produce wines exported around the world.
