Slovenia Quiz – Europe's Green Heart
Slovenia is a small country in Central Europe, where the Alps meet the Mediterranean and the Pannonian Plain. Though only about 20,000 square kilometers in size, it has snowy mountains, emerald rivers, vast caves, vineyards and a short stretch of Adriatic coast. With more than half its land covered by forest, it is one of the greenest countries in Europe.
Slovenia was part of the Habsburg Empire and later Yugoslavia before becoming independent in 1991. It joined the European Union in 2004 and uses the euro. Ljubljana, the capital, is a charming, car-free city center along the Ljubljanica River, designed largely by architect Jože Plečnik, with the Triple Bridge, the Dragon Bridge and a hilltop castle.
Slovenia's natural wonders are its biggest attractions. Lake Bled, with its island church and clifftop castle, is one of the most photographed places in Europe. Lake Bohinj is quieter and wilder. The Julian Alps and Triglav National Park offer hiking and climbing, while the Soča River is a paradise for kayakers. Underground, Postojna and Škocjan caves reveal huge chambers and rivers.
Slovenians love outdoor life and traditions. Beekeeping is a national passion, and Slovenia proposed World Bee Day to the United Nations. The Lipica stud farm is the original home of Lipizzaner horses. Food blends Alpine, Italian and Balkan influences, from potica nut rolls to kremšnita cream cake at Lake Bled. Many famous athletes, such as basketball star Luka Dončić, come from Slovenia.
This quiz covers the nature, history, landmarks and traditions of Slovenia.
Slovenia is also known for its food and wine. Each region has its own specialties, from Kranjska klobasa sausages to prosciutto from the Karst region and truffle dishes from Istria. Vineyards cover the hills in the east and west, and the world's oldest grapevine still bearing fruit grows in Maribor. Open kitchen markets in Ljubljana bring together chefs from across the country every Friday.
