Explanations: answer key for all 10 questions
- Q1: In which sea is the Greek island of Santorini?
Answer: Aegean
Santorini lies in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 kilometers southeast of mainland Greece. Ferries and flights connect it with Athens.
- Q2: Santorini belongs to which Greek island group?
Answer: Cyclades
The Cyclades are named for the circle they form around the sacred island of Delos. Mykonos, Naxos and Paros are also part of the group.
- Q3: What created Santorini's dramatic crescent shape and caldera?
Answer: A volcanic eruption
A massive eruption around 1600 BC caused the center of the island to collapse into the sea, leaving steep cliffs around a flooded caldera.
- Q4: Which Bronze Age town on Santorini was buried by volcanic ash and preserved like Pompeii?
Answer: Akrotiri
Akrotiri has multi-story houses, drains and beautiful wall paintings. Unlike Pompeii, no bodies were found, suggesting people escaped before the eruption.
- Q5: Which Santorini village is world famous for its sunsets?
Answer: Oia
Oia sits on the northern tip of the caldera, and crowds gather on its walls and rooftops every evening to watch the sun set over the sea.
- Q6: What is the capital of Santorini?
Answer: Fira
Fira, also called Thira, perches on the caldera cliff about 260 meters above the old port. Visitors climb up by cable car, on foot or, traditionally, on donkeys.
- Q7: What color are the famous church domes of Oia?
Answer: Blue
Blue domes and whitewashed walls are a classic Cyclades look. The white paint helps reflect the summer heat.
- Q8: What colors are the sands of Santorini's best-known volcanic beaches?
Answer: Red and black
Red Beach gets its color from iron-rich volcanic rock, while Perissa and Kamari have black volcanic sand that gets very hot in summer.
- Q9: Which white grape variety is Santorini's most famous wine grape?
Answer: Assyrtiko
Assyrtiko grows in volcanic soil, with vines woven into low basket shapes called kouloura to protect the grapes from strong winds.
- Q10: Which legendary lost civilization is sometimes linked to Santorini's ancient eruption?
Answer: Atlantis
Some historians think the destruction of Santorini and the decline of the Minoans may have inspired Plato's story of Atlantis, though there is no proof.
Santorini Quiz β Life on the Edge of a Volcano
Santorini is one of the most photographed islands in the world. Its white villages cling to the top of steep cliffs, looking down into a deep blue caldera formed by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. Visitors come for the views, the sunsets, the beaches and the wine.
The island's shape tells its story. Around 1600 BC, a huge eruption blew out the center of the island, which collapsed into the sea. Ash buried the Bronze Age town of Akrotiri, preserving its houses and colorful wall paintings for more than 3,000 years. The eruption may also have affected the Minoan civilization on nearby Crete.
The volcano is still active. Small islands in the middle of the caldera, Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, formed in later eruptions, and visitors can hike to their craters or swim in warm springs. In early 2025, thousands of small earthquakes shook the area, a reminder of the forces below.
Life on Santorini mixes tradition and tourism. Villages such as Oia and Fira are famous for blue domes and cave houses dug into the cliffs, while farmers grow Assyrtiko grapes, cherry tomatoes and fava beans in the dry volcanic soil.
This quiz covers Santorini's geography, history, villages and culture.
Santorini's popularity has brought challenges too. Cruise ships and summer crowds can overwhelm the narrow lanes of Oia and Fira, so the island has introduced limits on cruise visitors and encourages travelers to come in spring or autumn, when the weather is still warm and the villages are calmer.
