Resident Evil Quiz – 30 Years of Survival Horror
Resident Evil is one of the most successful video game series of all time. Created by Capcom and first released in 1996, it popularized the term survival horror, in which players must manage scarce ammunition and supplies while facing terrifying creatures. Over the years, the series has sold well over 150 million copies and inspired films, TV shows and countless imitators.
The first game sends members of the S.T.A.R.S. police unit, including Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, into a mysterious mansion near Raccoon City. They discover zombies and monsters created by the Umbrella Corporation's secret T-virus. Resident Evil 2 and 3 show the outbreak spreading through the city, introducing rookie officer Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield and the unstoppable Nemesis.
Later games changed the formula. Resident Evil 4, released in 2005, moved to an over-the-shoulder camera and became one of the most influential action games ever. Resident Evil 7 brought a first-person view and a return to pure horror, while Resident Evil Village introduced the famous Lady Dimitrescu. Capcom has also remade several older games with modern graphics.
Beyond games, Resident Evil has a long screen history. Milla Jovovich starred in six live-action films between 2002 and 2016, and new adaptations have followed, including a new film directed by Zach Cregger in 2026. In February 2026, Capcom released Resident Evil Requiem, a new chapter that returns to the ruins of Raccoon City, as the series reached its 30th anniversary.
