Explanations: answer key for all 10 questions
- Q1: Polar bears are officially classified as what kind of mammal?
Answer: Marine mammals
Because they spend much of their lives on sea ice and depend on the ocean for food, polar bears are considered marine mammals.
- Q2: What is the polar bear's main prey?
Answer: Ringed and bearded seals
Polar bears often wait beside breathing holes in the ice for seals to surface. Penguins live only in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Q3: Polar bear fur looks white, but each hair is actually what?
Answer: Transparent and hollow
The clear hairs scatter light, making the bear look white. A thick layer of fat also keeps it warm.
- Q4: Polar bears are strong swimmers. What do they mainly use to paddle?
Answer: Their large front paws
Their big front paws act like paddles. Some bears have been tracked swimming for days across open water.
- Q5: Which town in Manitoba, Canada, calls itself the Polar Bear Capital of the World?
Answer: Churchill
Each autumn, bears gather near Churchill on Hudson Bay waiting for the sea ice to form. Visitors watch them from special tundra vehicles.
- Q6: Where are polar bear cubs born?
Answer: In snow dens dug by their mother
Cubs are born in winter weighing less than a kilogram. They stay in the den for months, drinking their mother's rich milk.
- Q7: What is considered the biggest threat to polar bears today?
Answer: Loss of sea ice due to climate change
Less sea ice means fewer chances to hunt seals. Scientists closely monitor polar bear populations across the Arctic.
- Q8: International Polar Bear Day is held on which date?
Answer: February 27
The day, organized by Polar Bears International, raises awareness of the Arctic and the threats bears face.
- Q9: Adult male polar bears can weigh about how much?
Answer: Around 450 to 700 kilograms
Males are roughly twice the size of females. Standing on their hind legs, large males can be about 3 meters tall.
- Q10: Which Arctic islands of Norway are famous for polar bears, where there are more bears than people in some areas?
Answer: Svalbard
Residents of Svalbard are advised to carry protection when leaving towns because bears may roam nearby.
Polar Bear Quiz β Life on the Arctic Ice
The polar bear is one of the largest land carnivores on Earth and a powerful symbol of the Arctic. Perfectly adapted to a world of ice and freezing water, it spends much of its life on the frozen surface of the Arctic Ocean. Polar bears live in five countries: the United States, Canada, Russia, Norway and Denmark, through Greenland.
Polar bears depend on sea ice to hunt their main prey, ringed and bearded seals. They wait patiently at breathing holes or stalk seals resting on the ice. Their hollow, transparent fur, thick layer of fat and black skin help them stay warm. They are strong swimmers, paddling with their huge front paws, and can travel long distances between ice floes.
Female polar bears dig snow dens in winter, where they give birth to tiny cubs. The family stays inside for months, and the mother does not eat during that time. In spring, they emerge and head to the sea ice. Cubs stay with their mother for about two and a half years, learning how to hunt and survive.
Climate change is the greatest threat to polar bears. As sea ice melts earlier and forms later, bears have less time to hunt. Places like Churchill in Canada and Svalbard in Norway have become famous for polar bear watching, and events like International Polar Bear Day on February 27 help raise awareness of their future.
This quiz covers the biology, behavior and conservation of polar bears.
