Pokémon Quiz – Gotta Know Them All

Pokémon is the highest-grossing media franchise in the world, ahead of Star Wars and Marvel. It began in 1996 as a pair of Game Boy games and grew into an anime, trading cards, films, toys and mobile apps. Today there are more than 1,000 different Pokémon, and new ones are added with every main game.

The idea came from Satoshi Tajiri, who loved collecting insects as a child in the countryside near Tokyo. He imagined a game where players could catch creatures, train them and trade them with friends using a Game Boy link cable. That trading feature turned Pokémon into a social game from the very start.

Each Pokémon has one or two types, such as Fire, Water, Grass or Electric, and battles are a giant game of rock-paper-scissors: Water beats Fire, Fire beats Grass, and so on. Many Pokémon evolve into stronger forms, and Eevee is famous for having eight possible evolutions.

Pokémon GO brought the series into the real world in 2016, sending millions of people outside to search parks and streets for virtual creatures. Trading cards also enjoyed a huge boom, with rare cards selling for record prices.

This quiz covers characters, types, evolutions and the history of the franchise.

Part of the appeal is that Pokémon works at every level. Young players enjoy collecting cute creatures, while competitive players study stats, moves and team building for official tournaments such as the Pokémon World Championships, held every year since 2009. Many fans who started with the original games now share the series with their own children.
