Pakistan Quiz β From the Indus to the Karakoram
Pakistan is a country in South Asia with a population of more than 240 million people. Its landscapes are extremely varied, from the beaches and deserts of the south to fertile plains along the Indus River and some of the highest mountains on Earth in the north. Five of the world's fourteen peaks over 8,000 meters, including K2, are in Pakistan.
The land has one of the oldest histories in the world. The Indus Valley Civilization built advanced cities such as Mohenjo-daro and Harappa more than 4,500 years ago, with planned streets and drainage systems. Later, the region was part of Persian, Greek, Buddhist and Mughal empires. Pakistan became an independent country in 1947.
Pakistan's cities each have their own character. Islamabad, the green, planned capital, is home to the modern Faisal Mosque. Lahore, the cultural heart, is famous for the Badshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort, gardens and food streets. Karachi, the largest city, is a busy port on the Arabian Sea. In the north, the Hunza Valley and Karakoram Highway offer breathtaking mountain scenery.
Pakistani culture is lively and hospitable. Cricket is a national passion, and the team won the World Cup in 1992. Qawwali music, truck art covered in bright paintings and dishes such as biryani, nihari and kebabs are loved across the country. Malala Yousafzai, who campaigns for girls' education, became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner.
This quiz covers the geography, history, culture and famous people of Pakistan.
Hospitality and festivals bring Pakistanis together. Guests are welcomed with tea and generous meals, and weddings can last several days with music, henna and dancing. Eid celebrations fill markets with sweets and new clothes, and spring festivals once filled Lahore's skies with kites. In the mountains, the Kalash people of Chitral keep unique traditions, with colorful dress and seasonal festivals.
