Oscar Firsts Quiz – Breaking Barriers at the Academy Awards
Since 1929, the Academy Awards have honored the best in film. Along the way, the ceremony has marked many historic firsts: actors and filmmakers who broke barriers of race, gender, language and nationality. Each of these moments reflected wider changes in Hollywood and society, and many still inspire new generations of artists.
The very first ceremony was a short private dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. In 1940, Hattie McDaniel became the first Black performer to win an Oscar, though she had to sit apart from her co-stars. In 1964, Sidney Poitier became the first Black winner of Best Actor, and in 2002 Halle Berry became the first Black winner of Best Actress.
The Oscars slowly opened up to international talent. Sophia Loren won Best Actress for an Italian-language role in 1962, and decades later films and performers from around the world began winning top prizes. Chloé Zhao became the first woman of color to win Best Director in 2021, and Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win Best Actress in 2023.
New firsts keep arriving. At the 2026 ceremony, Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman to win Best Cinematography, KPop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Feature, and the first Oscar for Best Casting was presented. The television broadcast, first shown in 1953, now reaches audiences around the world every year.
