Olympic Games Quiz – The World's Greatest Sporting Festival
The Olympic Games bring together more nations than almost any other event on Earth. More than 200 teams march in the opening ceremony, and athletes compete in dozens of sports, from swimming and athletics to skateboarding and breaking. For many athletes, a single Olympic final is the result of a lifetime of training.
The ancient Olympics were held in Olympia, Greece, for more than a thousand years. The modern Games were revived by Pierre de Coubertin, and the first took place in Athens in 1896. The Winter Olympics followed in 1924, and the Paralympic Games, for athletes with disabilities, have been held alongside the Olympics since 1960.
Every edition leaves its mark. Jesse Owens's four gold medals in Berlin in 1936, Nadia Comăneci's perfect 10 in 1976, Usain Bolt's sprint records in 2008 and Michael Phelps's eight golds in Beijing are some of the most famous moments in sport. Paris 2024 added a new memory with an opening ceremony held on boats along the Seine.
The Olympic calendar keeps moving. Italy hosted the 2026 Winter Games across Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Los Angeles will host the Summer Games for the third time in 2028 and Brisbane will follow in 2032. Each host city competes for years to win the right to stage the Games.
This quiz covers the symbols, history and host cities of the Olympics, so it works for both sports fans and history lovers.
