Explanations: answer key for all 10 questions
  1. Q1: Tesla was born in 1856 in Smiljan, a village in present-day which country?

    Answer: Croatia

Tesla was an ethnic Serb born in the Austrian Empire, in what is now Croatia. His father was an Orthodox priest.

  2. Q2: Tesla is best known for developing which kind of electric power system?

    Answer: Alternating current (AC)

AC power can be sent over long distances more efficiently than DC. Most of the world's electric grids use it today.

  3. Q3: For which famous inventor did Tesla briefly work after arriving in the United States?

    Answer: Thomas Edison

Tesla arrived in New York in 1884 and worked for Edison's company for a few months before leaving after a dispute over pay.

  4. Q4: Which businessman bought Tesla's AC patents and backed his system?

    Answer: George Westinghouse

Westinghouse's company used Tesla's designs to compete with Edison's DC system in what became known as the War of the Currents.

  5. Q5: Which natural wonder became the site of a major AC power plant using Tesla's system in the 1890s?

    Answer: Niagara Falls

The Niagara Falls power project began delivering electricity to Buffalo, New York, in 1896, a big win for AC power.

  6. Q6: What is a Tesla coil?

    Answer: A high-voltage transformer

A Tesla coil produces very high voltages and dramatic electric sparks. It is still used in science demonstrations and shows.

  7. Q7: What is measured in teslas in the International System of Units?

    Answer: Magnetic flux density

The tesla was adopted as an SI unit in 1960. Hospital MRI machines often use magnets of 1.5 or 3 teslas.

  8. Q8: What was Wardenclyffe Tower meant to do?

Answer: Send wireless communication and power

Tesla built the tower on Long Island around 1901, funded partly by J.P. Morgan. The money ran out, and the tower was demolished in 1917.

  9. Q9: Which animals did Tesla famously care for in his later years in New York?

    Answer: Pigeons

Tesla fed pigeons in the parks and in his hotel rooms. He said he loved one white pigeon in particular.

  10. Q10: In which city did Tesla die in 1943?

    Answer: New York

Tesla died alone in Room 3327 of the Hotel New Yorker. A museum in Belgrade, Serbia, now holds his ashes and papers.

Nikola Tesla Quiz – The Inventor Who Electrified the World

Nikola Tesla was a brilliant inventor and engineer whose ideas helped power the modern world. He is best known for his work on alternating current, the system that carries electricity into homes and factories across the globe. He also explored wireless communication, radio, remote control and many other ideas that were far ahead of their time.

Tesla was born in 1856 in Smiljan, in present-day Croatia, to a Serbian family. He studied engineering in Graz and worked in Budapest and Paris before moving to New York in 1884. There he worked briefly for Thomas Edison, but the two men disagreed over pay and ideas, and Tesla soon left to develop his own inventions.

His AC induction motor and power system attracted the businessman George Westinghouse, who bought his patents. During the War of the Currents, Edison promoted direct current while Westinghouse and Tesla backed AC. Big public successes, including lighting the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and the Niagara Falls power plant, helped AC win.

Later, Tesla experimented with high-voltage coils and dreamed of sending power and messages through the air. His Wardenclyffe Tower project failed when funding ran out. He died with little money in a New York hotel in 1943, but his reputation has grown enormously since, and today an electric car company and a unit of science carry his name.

This quiz covers Nikola Tesla's life, inventions and legacy.

Historians still debate how much credit Tesla deserves for some ideas, such as radio, where Guglielmo Marconi won the fame and a Nobel Prize. In 1943, however, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on radio patents pointed to earlier work by Tesla and other inventors. His notebooks, lectures and patents show a mind that moved easily between practical engineering and bold visions of the future, from wireless power to drones.
