Nigeria Quiz β The Giant of Africa
Nigeria, in West Africa, is the most populous country on the continent and one of its largest economies. Often called the Giant of Africa, it is a land of great diversity, with more than 250 ethnic groups and over 500 languages. Its influence on music, film, literature and fashion reaches far beyond its borders.
Nigeria's history includes powerful kingdoms and empires. The Nok culture produced terracotta sculptures more than 2,000 years ago, and the Kingdom of Benin created the famous bronzes. The northern cities of Kano and Katsina were centers of trade across the Sahara. Nigeria became a British colony and gained independence in 1960. In 1991, the capital moved from Lagos to Abuja.
Lagos, on the Atlantic coast, is one of the largest cities in Africa and a center of business, music and nightlife. The Niger and Benue rivers cross the country, and landscapes range from coastal mangroves and rainforests in the south to savannas in the north. Landmarks include Zuma Rock, Olumo Rock and the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, a UNESCO site.
Nigerian culture has gone global. Nollywood produces thousands of films each year, and Afrobeats artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid and Tems top international charts, building on Fela Kuti's Afrobeat. Writers Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie are world-famous. Nigerian food, including jollof rice, suya and pounded yam with egusi soup, is loved across Africa and beyond.
This quiz covers the history, geography, culture and food of Nigeria.
Festivals and fashion are a big part of Nigerian life. The Durbar festivals of the north feature horsemen in dazzling robes, while the Calabar Carnival in December fills the streets with music and costumes. Nigerians are known for bold, colorful clothing made from Ankara prints and aso-oke cloth, and big, joyful weddings, called owambe parties, can last all day with music and dancing.
