Netflix Originals Quiz – How Streaming Changed TV

Netflix started in 1997 by mailing DVDs in red envelopes. Ten years later it began streaming, and in 2013 it released House of Cards, a big-budget political drama, with every episode available on the same day. Viewers could watch a whole season in a weekend, and the word binge-watching entered everyday language.

Since then, Netflix has become one of the largest producers of films and series in the world. Its originals range from historical dramas like The Crown and Bridgerton to science fiction such as Stranger Things and Dark, and limited series like The Queen's Gambit, which caused a worldwide boom in chess.

One of the biggest changes Netflix brought is how easily shows now travel between countries. Money Heist from Spain, Dark from Germany, Lupin from France and Squid Game from South Korea all found huge audiences far from home, helped by subtitles and dubbing in dozens of languages.

Netflix has also pushed into cinema. Roma became its first Best Picture nominee in 2019, and since then the streamer has released Oscar-nominated films from well-known directors every year.

This quiz covers the shows and films that defined Netflix's rise, from its first original drama to its biggest global hits.

Netflix's habit of releasing whole seasons at once also changed how shows are written. Writers know that many viewers will watch the next episode right away, so cliffhangers come at the end of nearly every episode, and storylines can be more complex because nobody has to wait a week to remember what happened.
