Movie Characters Quiz β The Faces We Never Forget
Great films are remembered for their stories, but even more for their characters. Long after the details of a plot fade, people still picture a hat and a whip, a pair of ruby slippers or a black cape against the night sky. Iconic characters become part of everyday language, turn up as Halloween costumes and inspire sequels, remakes and spin-offs for decades.
Some of the most famous characters began in books or comics. Sherlock Holmes came from Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, Frodo from J.R.R. Tolkien's novels and Batman from the pages of Detective Comics. Others were created for the screen, like Indiana Jones, Marty McFly and Captain Jack Sparrow, who all started as ideas in a writers' room.
Actors often shape a role as much as the script does. Harrison Ford gave Indiana Jones his dry humor, Johnny Depp turned Jack Sparrow into a swaying rock star of the high seas and Michael J. Fox made Marty McFly the most likeable teenager in science fiction.
Villains matter too. A calm, polite computer like HAL 9000 can be more frightening than any monster, because it shows how something trusted can turn dangerous. A good villain gives the hero something worth fighting.
This quiz mixes heroes, sidekicks, animals and machines from almost a century of cinema, from The Wizard of Oz to Shrek.
