Luxembourg Quiz – A Small Country with a Big Role
Luxembourg is a small landlocked country in Western Europe, bordered by Belgium, France and Germany. Although it covers only about 2,600 square kilometers, it plays an important role in European politics and finance and is one of the richest countries in the world. It is also the world's only remaining grand duchy, with a Grand Duke as head of state.
Luxembourg City, the capital, is built on rocky cliffs above the Alzette and Pétrusse valleys. For centuries, it was one of the strongest fortresses in Europe, nicknamed the Gibraltar of the North. Its tunnels, the Bock Casemates, sheltered soldiers and civilians. Today, its old quarters and fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Luxembourg was one of the six founding members of the European Economic Community and hosts European institutions such as the Court of Justice. Its economy, once based on steel, is now driven by banking, finance and technology. Nearly half of its workforce commutes from neighboring countries, and in 2020 it made all public transport free.
Beyond the capital, Luxembourg offers castles such as Vianden, hiking trails in the Mullerthal region, the forested Ardennes in the north and vineyards along the Moselle River. Residents speak Luxembourgish, French and German, and many also speak English or Portuguese. Traditional dishes include judd mat gaardebounen, smoked pork with broad beans.
This quiz covers the history, government, landscapes and culture of Luxembourg.
Life in Luxembourg is remarkably international. Almost half of its residents are foreign citizens, with large Portuguese, French, Italian and Belgian communities, and many children grow up speaking three or four languages. National Day on June 23 celebrates the Grand Duke's official birthday with fireworks, parades and concerts, and the Schueberfouer fair, dating back to 1340, fills the capital every summer.
