Latvia Quiz – The Heart of the Baltics
Latvia is the middle of the three Baltic states, lying between Estonia and Lithuania on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea. It is a land of forests, rivers, lakes and long sandy beaches, with a population of under two million people. About half of the country is covered by forest, making nature an important part of everyday life.
Riga, the capital, was founded in 1201 and became a rich trading city of the Hanseatic League. Its old town has church spires, merchants' houses and the colorful House of the Blackheads. Riga is also famous for its Art Nouveau district, with hundreds of elaborately decorated buildings from the early 20th century.
Latvia's history includes rule by Germans, Swedes, Poles and Russians. It declared independence in 1918, was occupied during World War II and became part of the Soviet Union. In 1989, Latvians joined the Baltic Way, a human chain of about two million people across the three Baltic states, and the country regained independence in 1991. It joined the EU and NATO in 2004.
Latvian culture is rich in song. More than a million short folk songs, called dainas, have been collected, and the Song and Dance Festival brings together tens of thousands of performers. The Midsummer festival, Jāņi, is the biggest celebration of the year. Visitors enjoy Gauja National Park, Rundāle Palace, the beaches of Jūrmala and hearty food such as rye bread and grey peas with bacon.
This quiz covers the history, nature, architecture and traditions of Latvia.
Latvians have a deep connection to nature and the seasons. Many families have countryside homes where they grow vegetables, pick mushrooms and enjoy saunas called pirts, sometimes with birch branches. Storks nest on rooftops and poles across the countryside in summer, and the coast has more than 500 kilometers of sandy beaches, many of them wild and empty.
