Lagos Portugal Quiz – History and Beauty in the Algarve

Lagos is a historic town on Portugal's sunny southern coast, in the Algarve region. Today it is known for golden cliffs, clear water, lively streets and beaches that attract visitors from around the world. But Lagos also played a major role in one of the most important periods of world history, the Portuguese Age of Discovery.

In the 15th century, Prince Henry the Navigator supported voyages from the Algarve along the coast of West Africa. Lagos was one of the main ports for these expeditions. In 1434, Gil Eanes, a sailor from Lagos, became the first European known to sail past Cape Bojador, opening the way for later explorers who reached India and Brazil.

This era also had a dark side. In 1444, Lagos became the site of one of the first markets where enslaved Africans were sold in Europe, marking the start of the Atlantic slave trade. A small museum now tells this history. In 1755, a great earthquake and tsunami struck Portugal, badly damaging Lagos, and the capital of the Algarve moved from Lagos to Faro.

Modern Lagos combines history with natural beauty. Its old town is surrounded by walls and filled with tiled churches and narrow streets. Ponta da Piedade's cliffs and sea caves are among the most photographed sights in Portugal, and long beaches such as Meia Praia are ideal for swimming. The town also shares its name with Lagos, the giant Nigerian city whose name was given by Portuguese sailors.

This quiz covers the history, landmarks and culture of Lagos in Portugal.
