Kenya Quiz – The Home of the Safari
Kenya is a country in East Africa, straddling the equator on the shores of the Indian Ocean. It is famous for spectacular wildlife, open savannas, snow-capped mountains and white sand beaches. For many people, Kenya is the classic safari destination, where lions, elephants, giraffes and zebras roam vast national parks and reserves.
The Maasai Mara is Kenya's most famous reserve. Each year, it hosts the Great Migration, when more than a million wildebeest, along with zebras and gazelles, arrive from Tanzania's Serengeti in search of fresh grass. Their dramatic crossings of the Mara River, past waiting crocodiles, are one of nature's greatest spectacles. Amboseli offers views of elephants beneath Mount Kilimanjaro.
Kenya's landscapes are shaped by the Great Rift Valley, which cuts through the country and contains lakes, volcanoes and escarpments. Mount Kenya, Africa's second-highest peak, gave the country its name. On the coast, Mombasa and the island town of Lamu reflect centuries of Swahili, Arab and Indian trade and culture. Nairobi, the capital, is a modern city with a national park on its edge.
Kenya is home to more than 40 ethnic groups, including the Kikuyu, Luo and Maasai. Swahili and English are official languages. Kenyan runners are among the best in the world, and Eliud Kipchoge became the first person to run a marathon distance in under two hours. Environmentalist Wangari Maathai won the Nobel Peace Prize for her tree-planting movement.
