Kazakhstan Quiz – Heart of Central Asia

Kazakhstan is a huge country in Central Asia, stretching from the Caspian Sea in the west to the Altai Mountains on the borders with China and Russia. It is the largest landlocked country in the world and the ninth-largest overall. Much of its land is made up of the Kazakh Steppe, a vast grassland where nomadic peoples have herded horses, sheep and camels for thousands of years.

For centuries, the region was part of the Silk Road, linking China with Europe and the Middle East. Kazakh khanates ruled the steppe before the area became part of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. Kazakhstan became independent in 1991. Its huge reserves of oil, gas, uranium and minerals have helped it become one of the wealthiest countries in Central Asia.

Astana, the capital since 1997, is known for bold modern architecture, including the Bayterek Tower and the tent-shaped Khan Shatyr. Almaty, the largest city, sits beneath snowy mountains and is surrounded by wild apple forests. Kazakhstan also hosts the Baikonur Cosmodrome, from where Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space in 1961.

Natural wonders include Charyn Canyon, the turquoise Kolsai Lakes and the singing sand dune of Altyn-Emel. Kazakh culture values hospitality and horsemanship: guests are offered tea, kumis made from mare's milk and beshbarmak, a dish of boiled meat and noodles. Eagle hunting, horseback games and the dombra, a two-stringed lute, are important traditions.

This quiz covers the geography, history, space heritage and culture of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan's seasons are extreme. Winters on the steppe can drop below βˆ’40Β°C, while summers in the south bring scorching heat. People adapt with warm felt and fur clothing, hearty meat dishes and plenty of tea. In spring, the steppe bursts into bloom with wild tulips, which botanists believe are ancestors of many garden tulips grown in the Netherlands and around the world.
