Indonesia Quiz β The World's Largest Archipelago
Indonesia is the world's largest island country, made up of more than 17,000 islands stretching between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is home to more than 270 million people, making it the fourth most populous nation on Earth. Its islands include Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, Bali and part of New Guinea, each with distinct landscapes, languages and cultures.
Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has more active volcanoes than any other country. Eruptions such as Tambora in 1815 and Krakatoa in 1883 affected the whole world. Volcanic soil also makes the land very fertile, supporting rice terraces, spice gardens and coffee plantations. The country's rainforests shelter orangutans, Sumatran tigers and rhinos, and the islands of Komodo National Park are home to Komodo dragons.
The region was once part of great Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms, which built monuments like Borobudur and Prambanan. Islam later spread through trade, and today Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. The islands were sought by European traders for spices such as nutmeg and cloves, and the Dutch ruled for centuries before Indonesia declared independence in 1945.
Modern Indonesia combines great diversity with a shared national language, Bahasa Indonesia. Jakarta is the busy capital, but a new capital, Nusantara, is being built on Borneo. Visitors come for Bali's temples and beaches, diving in Raja Ampat and treks up volcanoes like Bromo. Indonesian food, including nasi goreng, satay and rendang, is loved around the world.
