Roughly how many times does the heart beat in a day?

Explanations: answer key for all 10 questions
  1. Q1: How many bones are in the adult human body?

    Answer: 206

Adults have 206 bones, but babies are born with around 300. Many of them, especially in the skull and spine, fuse together as we grow.

  2. Q2: Roughly how many tiny air sacs, called alveoli, are in a pair of adult human lungs?

    Answer: About 480 million

Adult lungs contain around 480 million alveoli, where oxygen passes into the blood. Spread out flat, their surface would cover roughly half a tennis court.

  3. Q3: Which blood cells help the body fight infections?

    Answer: White blood cells

White blood cells find and destroy germs. Red blood cells carry oxygen, and platelets help blood clot when you get a cut.

  4. Q4: Which is the smallest bone in the human body?

    Answer: Stapes

The stapes, or stirrup, sits in the middle ear and is only about 3 millimeters long. It passes sound vibrations to the inner ear.

  5. Q5: How many chambers does the human heart have?

    Answer: 4

The heart has two upper chambers, the atria, and two lower chambers, the ventricles. The right side pumps blood to the lungs and the left side pumps it to the rest of the body.

  6. Q6: Which is the longest bone in the human body?

    Answer: Femur

The femur, or thigh bone, makes up about a quarter of a person's height. It is also one of the strongest bones in the body.

  7. Q7: Which organs filter the blood to make urine?

    Answer: Kidneys

The two kidneys filter around 180 liters of blood plasma a day, removing waste and extra water. Most people can live a healthy life with just one.

  8. Q8: Which pigment gives skin, hair and eyes their color?

    Answer: Melanin

Melanin is made by cells called melanocytes and helps protect the skin from ultraviolet light. Keratin is a protein in hair and nails, and collagen gives skin its strength.

  9. Q9: Which part of the brain is mainly responsible for balance and coordination?

    Answer: Cerebellum

The cerebellum sits at the back of the brain, below the main hemispheres. It contains more than half of all the brain's nerve cells, even though it is much smaller.

  10. Q10: Roughly how many times does the heart beat in a day?

    Answer: About 100,000

At about 70 beats a minute, the heart beats roughly 100,000 times a day and more than 2.5 billion times in an average lifetime.

Human Body Quiz – Inside the Machine You Live In

The human body is the most complex machine most of us will ever own. Trillions of cells work together to keep us breathing, moving, thinking and healing, usually without us noticing. Learning how the body works helps us understand everything from why we get a fever to why exercise and sleep matter so much.

The body is built from systems that each have a job. The skeleton gives us shape and protects our organs, muscles let us move, the heart and blood vessels deliver oxygen, the lungs take it in and the kidneys and liver clean the blood. The nervous system, led by the brain, connects everything and controls how we respond to the world.

Many facts about the body are surprising. Babies are born with far more bones than adults, the smallest bone in the body is tucked inside the ear, and the largest organ is not inside us at all but wrapped around us: the skin. The heart beats around 100,000 times a day without ever taking a break.

Our bodies also show how closely structure and function are linked. The cerebellum, at the back of the brain, is small but packed with nerve cells because balance and fine movement take an enormous amount of processing. Melanin in our skin is a natural sunscreen, and the femur is long and thick because it carries our weight with every step.

This quiz covers bones, organs, blood and the brain, with a clear explanation for each answer.

What This Quiz Teaches

This quiz is great for students, future nurses and doctors, and anyone curious about how their own body works.

  • How many bones adults have and why babies have more
  • How the lungs pass oxygen into the blood
  • What white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets do
  • How the heart is built and how often it beats
  • What the kidneys and melanin do
  • Which part of the brain controls balance

Quick Facts About the Human Body

  • The human body contains about 37 trillion cells.
