Harry Potter Quiz – How Well Do You Know the Wizarding World?

J.K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels were published between 1997 and 2007 and follow Harry from his first letter from Hogwarts to the final battle against Lord Voldemort. The books have sold more than 600 million copies in over 80 languages, and the eight Warner Bros. films released between 2001 and 2011 brought Hogwarts, Diagon Alley and the Forbidden Forest to a whole new audience.

Part of what keeps fans coming back is the detail: the spells, the creatures, the family trees and the small objects that turn out to matter several books later. This quiz picks up on that detail, from Harry's owl to the Hallows.

Each book covers one school year, which is why the series grows longer and darker as Harry gets older. The original British edition of the Philosopher's Stone has 223 pages, while the Order of the Phoenix, the longest book in the series, runs to more than 760.

What This Quiz Teaches

The quiz suits readers who finished the series years ago as well as new fans working through it for the first time. It checks how well you remember the story and fills in a few facts many readers miss.

  • How the Sorting Hat decides a student's house, and what each house values
  • Why the first book has two different titles on either side of the Atlantic
  • Which magical objects drive the plot of The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Deathly Hallows
  • Who owns which pet, house and creature in the wizarding world
  • The legend of the three Deathly Hallows and why they matter in the final book

Quick Facts About Harry Potter

  • Rowling first thought of Harry on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990.
  • Bloomsbury's first print run of the Philosopher's Stone was only 500 hardback copies, and first editions now sell for tens of thousands of dollars.
  • Harry's birthday is July 31, 1980, the same day of the year as Rowling's own.
  • The Deathly Hallows sold about 11 million copies in the US and UK in its first 24 hours on sale in 2007.
  • The stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, set 19 years after the final book, opened in London's West End in 2016.
  • Many of the film sets, including the Great Hall, can be visited at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in Leavesden, near London.
