Harry Potter House Quiz – The Four Houses of Hogwarts

In the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, every student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is sorted into one of four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. The Sorting Hat makes the choice on the first night, and from then on the house becomes like a family, with its own common room, dormitory, colors and Quidditch team.

Each house was named after one of the four founders of Hogwarts, who lived more than a thousand years ago. Godric Gryffindor prized bravery, Helga Hufflepuff valued loyalty and hard work, Rowena Ravenclaw favored intelligence and wit, and Salazar Slytherin looked for ambition and cunning. Slytherin quarreled with the others and eventually left the school.

The houses have rich traditions. Gryffindor's common room sits in a tower behind the portrait of the Fat Lady, Ravenclaw's is entered by answering a riddle, Hufflepuff's lies near the kitchens and Slytherin's is in the dungeons under the lake. Each also has its own ghost, from Nearly Headless Nick in Gryffindor to the Bloody Baron in Slytherin.

Throughout the school year, students win and lose points for their house in the race for the House Cup. Objects linked to the founders, such as the Sword of Gryffindor, Hufflepuff's cup, Ravenclaw's diadem and Slytherin's locket, play major roles in the story. Many fans today proudly identify with their own Hogwarts house.

This quiz covers the founders, symbols, traditions and famous members of the Hogwarts houses.
