Explanations: answer key for all 10 questions
- Q1: Which country flies this flag?
Answer: Italy
Italy's green, white and red tricolore was first used in 1797 and became the national flag of the republic in 1948. Ireland's flag uses orange instead of red, and Mexico's adds a coat of arms.
- Q2: This flag belongs to which European country?
Answer: Germany
Germany's black, red and gold horizontal stripes go back to the democratic movement of the 1840s. Belgium uses black, yellow and red in vertical stripes, which makes the two easy to mix up.
- Q3: Which Asian country's flag is shown here?
Answer: South Korea
South Korea's flag, the Taegukgi, has a red and blue circle for balance between opposite forces. The four black trigrams in the corners stand for heaven, earth, water and fire.
- Q4: Which country's flag is this, with a coat of arms in the center?
Answer: Mexico
Mexico's coat of arms shows an eagle on a cactus eating a snake, from the Aztec legend of how Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City, was founded. Without the emblem, it would look almost like Italy's flag.
- Q5: Which country uses this flag?
Answer: India
India's saffron, white and green flag was adopted in July 1947, shortly before independence. The navy blue wheel in the center, the Ashoka Chakra, has 24 spokes. Niger's flag has an orange circle instead.
- Q6: Which country's flag is shown here?
Answer: Turkey
Turkey's flag shows a white crescent and star on a red field, a design used since Ottoman times. Tunisia's flag has a similar crescent and star, but inside a white circle.
- Q7: Which nation does this flag represent?
Answer: Jamaica
Jamaica adopted its gold, green and black flag at independence in 1962. It is often noted as the only national flag with no red, white or blue in it.
- Q8: Which country is represented by this blue and white flag?
Answer: Greece
Greece's flag has nine blue and white stripes, often said to match the nine syllables of the motto Freedom or Death. The cross in the corner reflects the Greek Orthodox Church.
- Q9: Which African country flies this flag?
Answer: Kenya
Kenya's flag, adopted at independence in 1963, shows a red, black and white Maasai shield with two crossed spears. Black stands for the people, red for the struggle for freedom and green for the land.
- Q10: This flag belongs to which country?
Answer: Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan's sky-blue flag shows a golden sun with 32 rays above a soaring steppe eagle, with a traditional ornament along the left edge. It was adopted in 1992, soon after independence.
Guess the Flag Quiz β Can You Read a Flag at a Glance?
Flags are designed to be recognized in a second, from far away, flapping in the wind. That is why most national flags use a few bold colors and simple shapes: stripes, crosses, stars, circles and crescents. The trouble is that with nearly 200 countries using the same small set of ideas, many flags end up looking alike, and that is what makes a flag quiz both fun and surprisingly tricky.
In this quiz, every question shows a real flag. Each wrong answer is a country whose flag shares something with the right one, such as the same colors, the same layout or a similar symbol. To get a perfect score you need to look closely at stripe direction, the order of the colors and the emblem in the middle.
A few habits help. First, check whether the stripes run across or up and down, since many pairs differ only in that. Second, read the colors from top to bottom or left to right; reversed colors often mean a different country. Third, look at the symbol: a wheel, a shield, an eagle or a sun usually settles it at once.
Colors also carry clues about history. Red, white and blue are common in countries influenced by Britain, France and the United States, while green, yellow and red are widely used across Africa as Pan-African colors. Crescents and stars often point to countries with a long Islamic history.
Once you finish, open the explanations to learn what each flag's colors and symbols mean.
