Explanations: answer key for all 10 questions
- Q1: Which of these animals can doze while standing up?
Answer: Horse
Horses can doze on their feet thanks to a stay apparatus in their legs that locks the joints without much effort. For deep sleep, though, they still need to lie down for short periods.
- Q2: Which fruit floats in water because about a quarter of it is air?
Answer: Apple
Apples float because roughly 25 percent of their volume is air trapped between their cells. That is why bobbing for apples works as a party game.
- Q3: What color is a polar bear's skin under its fur?
Answer: Black
A polar bear's skin is black, which helps it soak up heat from the sun. Its fur is not truly white either: each hair is hollow and clear and only looks white as it scatters light.
- Q4: People in which country eat some of the most chocolate per person in the world?
Answer: Switzerland
The Swiss eat around 11 kilograms (about 24 pounds) of chocolate per person every year, one of the highest rates on Earth. Milk chocolate was first made in Switzerland by Daniel Peter in 1875.
- Q5: A blue whale's heart is roughly the size of what?
Answer: A small car
A blue whale's heart weighs about 180 kilograms (400 pounds) and is about as big as a small car. The blue whale is the largest animal known to have lived, longer than a basketball court.
- Q6: What is a baby kangaroo called?
Answer: Joey
A baby kangaroo is called a joey, and it spends its first months growing inside its mother's pouch. Baby koalas and wombats are called joeys too.
- Q7: Which country has more ancient pyramids than Egypt?
Answer: Sudan
Sudan has around 200 to 255 ancient pyramids, built by the Kingdom of Kush, compared with Egypt's 120 or so. The Nubian pyramids at Meroë are smaller and steeper than Egypt's.
- Q8: Which animal has fingerprints so similar to humans' that they are hard to tell apart?
Answer: Koala
Koala fingerprints look so much like human ones that they are hard to tell apart even under a microscope. Scientists think they help koalas grip branches and feel the eucalyptus leaves they eat.
- Q9: Which part of the human body cannot repair itself?
Answer: Tooth enamel
Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the body, but it contains no living cells, so it cannot grow back once it is damaged. Bones and the liver, by contrast, can heal and regrow.
- Q10: Which bird can fly backward?
Answer: Hummingbird
Hummingbirds can hover and fly backward because their wings rotate at the shoulder and beat up to about 80 times a second. No other group of birds can fly backward for long.
Fun Facts Quiz – Trivia Worth Sharing
A fun fact is a true piece of information that makes people stop and say, really? Fun facts stick in the memory because they surprise us. Most people picture polar bears as white all over, assume Egypt has the most pyramids and think only humans have fingerprints. The truth is stranger, and that is what makes it worth knowing.
Every question in this quiz is built around one of those surprises. The animal kingdom provides plenty, from koalas to hummingbirds, but there are also facts about food, history and the human body. The wrong answers are believable on purpose, so you will need to think rather than guess.
Fun facts are also a great way into bigger topics. Learning why apples float leads to questions about density, and the story of Sudan's pyramids opens up the history of the ancient Kingdom of Kush.
Many of the best fun facts come from scientists who simply looked more closely at something familiar. Researchers measured koala fingerprints, tested goldfish memory and checked what lies under a polar bear's fur. Their findings show that even the animals and foods we see every day still hold a few secrets.
