Famous Lakes Quiz – The World's Most Remarkable Waters
Lakes come in every shape and color. Some are so large they are called seas, others are so salty that people float on them, and a few are bright pink or deep turquoise. They provide drinking water, fish and transport, and many of them have shaped the cultures and economies of the people living around them.
Most lakes formed in one of a few ways. Glaciers carved basins that later filled with water, like many lakes in Canada, Scotland and the Alps. Others fill volcanic craters or cracks in the Earth's crust, such as the great lakes of East Africa's Rift Valley. Some, like the Dead Sea and Lake Van, have no outlet to the sea, so their water becomes salty as it evaporates.
Lakes also hold records. The Caspian Sea is the largest by area, Lake Baikal the deepest, the Dead Sea's shore the lowest point on land and Titicaca one of the highest lakes that boats can travel on. Loch Ness, meanwhile, holds a different kind of fame thanks to its legendary monster.
Many lakes are major tourist destinations. Visitors cruise Lake Geneva and Lake Garda, paddle across Lake Louise in summer and float in the Dead Sea's mineral-rich water.
This quiz takes you around the world's most famous lakes, with an explanation for each answer.
