Croatia Quiz – Jewel of the Adriatic
Croatia is a country in southeastern Europe with a long, beautiful coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Known for its clear blue water, historic walled towns and more than a thousand islands, it has become one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. Inland, it offers green hills, rivers, national parks and the lively capital, Zagreb.
Croatia's history is visible everywhere. The Romans left Diocletian's Palace in Split, where people still live within ancient walls. During the Middle Ages, the Republic of Ragusa, today's Dubrovnik, became a rich trading power. Later, the region was influenced by Venice, the Ottomans and the Habsburgs. Croatia became independent in 1991 and joined the European Union in 2013.
Natural wonders include Plitvice Lakes National Park, with its chain of turquoise lakes and waterfalls, and Krka National Park, where visitors walk on wooden paths beside cascades. Along the coast, islands such as Hvar, Brač, Vis and Korčula offer beaches, vineyards and old stone villages. Dubrovnik's walls and the TV series Game of Thrones made the city world-famous.
Croatia has given the world more than its scenery. The necktie, or cravat, comes from Croatian soldiers' scarves, the Dalmatian dog is named after its coastal region, and inventor Nikola Tesla was born there. The national football team surprised the world by reaching the 2018 World Cup final, led by Luka Modrić.
This quiz covers the history, landscapes, inventions and culture of Croatia.
Croatian food changes from region to region. Along the coast, grilled fish, octopus salad, black risotto colored with squid ink and local olive oil are favorites. Inland, people enjoy hearty stews, roast meats and štrukli, a cheese-filled pastry from Zagreb. Coffee culture is strong too: friends can spend hours over a single cup at seaside cafés, a habit locals call a slow coffee.
