Coco Chanel Quiz – The Woman Who Changed Fashion
Coco Chanel was one of the most influential fashion designers in history. In the early 20th century, she freed women from tight corsets and heavy dresses and replaced them with simple, comfortable and elegant clothing. Many items she popularized, from the little black dress to the tweed jacket and the quilted handbag, are still worn and copied around the world today.
Born Gabrielle Chanel in Saumur, France, in 1883, she grew up in poverty. After her mother died, she was placed in an orphanage run by nuns at Aubazine, where she learned to sew. As a young woman she sang in cafés, where she picked up the nickname Coco, before starting to make and sell hats in Paris.
Her first fashion boutiques opened in Paris and the seaside town of Deauville in the 1910s. She used jersey, a fabric then used for underwear, to make relaxed clothes for active women. In 1921 she launched Chanel No. 5, one of the best-selling perfumes ever, and in 1926 she introduced the little black dress, which Vogue predicted would become a uniform.
Chanel closed her couture house during World War II, a period that remains controversial because of her links with German officers. She returned in 1954, aged 71, and created the famous tweed suit and the 2.55 bag. She died in 1971 at the Ritz in Paris. Karl Lagerfeld later turned Chanel into one of the world's most valuable luxury brands.
This quiz covers Coco Chanel's life, designs and lasting legacy.
