China Quiz β An Ancient Civilization in the Modern World
China is one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations and one of its largest countries. It stretches from the Himalayas and the Gobi Desert to tropical southern coasts, and is home to more than 1.4 billion people. Its long history, rich culture and rapid modern growth make it one of the most influential nations on Earth.
For thousands of years, China was ruled by dynasties such as the Qin, Han, Tang, Song, Ming and Qing. The first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, unified the country in 221 BC and was buried with the Terracotta Army. Later emperors lived in Beijing's Forbidden City. Ancient China gave the world paper, printing, gunpowder and the compass, and traded silk and porcelain along the Silk Road.
China's landscapes are as varied as its history. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers have supported farming for millennia. Mountains such as Huangshan and the pillars of Zhangjiajie inspire painters and filmmakers, and the Great Wall winds across the north. Sichuan's bamboo forests are home to the giant panda, a national symbol.
Modern China includes giant cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, with high-speed trains connecting them. Chinese food varies by region, from spicy Sichuan dishes to Cantonese dim sum and Beijing roast duck. Festivals like Lunar New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival are celebrated by Chinese communities around the world.
This quiz covers the geography, history, inventions and culture of China.
China is also a land of enormous variety. More than 50 ethnic groups are officially recognized, each with its own customs, clothing and festivals. Regions differ in climate, from the icy winters of Harbin, famous for its ice sculpture festival, to the tropical beaches of Hainan.
