Every four years, athletes from across Asia meet on one enormous stage. Medals are won by fractions of a second, national records disappear, new sports enter the program, and host cities become part of Asian sporting history.

Some answers will be familiar to anyone who follows international sports. Others reach further back than recent editions and reward people who remember where the Games began, which countries have dominated the medal table, and how the competition has changed over time.

Ten questions. Decades of sporting history. Plenty of room for one unexpected answer to ruin a perfect score.

Asia's Huge Multi-Sport Competition

The first Asian Games were held in New Delhi, India, in 1951. Eleven National Olympic Committees participated, beginning a competition that would grow dramatically over the following decades.

The event is organized under the Olympic Council of Asia and normally follows a four-year cycle. Like the Olympic Games, it brings numerous sports together within one major international competition.

Athletics, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, soccer, and combat sports have all featured, but the program also reflects sporting interests from across Asia.

That variety is exactly what makes Asian Games trivia interesting. One question can involve a swimming record, while the next jumps to a host city, martial art, or medal-table milestone.

Did You Know? The Asian Games Have Changed With Asia

The Games have traveled widely since their New Delhi debut.

Tokyo hosted in 1958, followed over the decades by cities including Bangkok, Tehran, Beijing, Hiroshima, Busan, Doha, Guangzhou, Incheon, Jakarta and Palembang, and Hangzhou.

Some hosts have appeared more than once. Bangkok, in particular, has played an unusually large role in Asian Games history by hosting four editions.

The sports program has evolved too. Alongside traditional Olympic events, competitions associated strongly with Asian sporting culture have gained a major stage. Kabaddi, for example, became a medal sport at the 1990 Asian Games.

More recently, competitive gaming entered the picture. Esports made its Asian Games debut as an official medal event at Hangzhou 2022, marking a striking change from the program of the original 1951 Games.

The name “Hangzhou 2022” can also cause an excellent trivia trap: although the event retained its 2022 name, it was postponed and actually held in 2023.

China topped the medal table at Hangzhou, continuing a long period of success in the competition.

One Continent, Far More Than One Kind of Sports Trivia

Remembering Olympic champions won't guarantee a perfect score here.

That's what makes the challenge interesting: you aren't trying to master one sport.

You're trying to remember more than seven decades of Asian sporting history.
