Explanations: answer key for all 10 questions
- Q1: What is the longest river in Asia?
Answer: Yangtze
The Yangtze flows about 6,300 kilometers across China from the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea at Shanghai. It is the third-longest river in the world, after the Nile and the Amazon.
- Q2: Which is the largest country lying entirely in Asia?
Answer: China
China covers about 9.6 million square kilometers. Russia is larger overall, but part of it lies in Europe, so China is the largest country found entirely within Asia.
- Q3: K2, the world's second-highest mountain, lies on the border between Pakistan and which country?
Answer: China
K2 rises to 8,611 meters on the border between Pakistan and China in the Karakoram range. Climbers consider it far more dangerous than Mount Everest.
- Q4: Which desert stretches across southern Mongolia and northern China?
Answer: Gobi
The Gobi is a cold desert, where winter temperatures can drop below minus 40 Β°C. It is famous for dinosaur fossils, including the first dinosaur eggs recognized by scientists, found in the 1920s.
- Q5: Which Asian country is made up of more than 17,000 islands?
Answer: Indonesia
Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago country, with more than 17,000 islands stretching about 5,000 kilometers from east to west. Only around 6,000 of them are inhabited.
- Q6: Which lake between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan has shrunk dramatically since the 1960s?
Answer: Aral Sea
Soviet irrigation projects diverted the rivers that fed the Aral Sea, and by the 2010s much of it had dried up. A dam built in 2005 has helped the northern part recover.
- Q7: What is the highest mountain in Japan?
Answer: Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji rises to 3,776 meters on the island of Honshu and last erupted in 1707. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 as a cultural site of pilgrimage and art.
- Q8: The Himalayas separate the Indian subcontinent from which high plateau to the north?
Answer: Tibetan Plateau
The Tibetan Plateau averages more than 4,500 meters above sea level and is often called the roof of the world. Many of Asia's great rivers, including the Yangtze, Mekong and Indus, start there.
- Q9: Which country is home to Hang Son Doong, the world's largest known cave?
Answer: Vietnam
Hang Son Doong in Vietnam's Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park was explored by scientists in 2009. Its main passage is so large it has its own jungle and weather.
- Q10: Which Himalayan country between India and China measures its progress by Gross National Happiness?
Answer: Bhutan
Bhutan introduced the idea of Gross National Happiness in the 1970s as a way of measuring well-being instead of only economic growth. It also limits tourism to protect its culture and nature.
Asia Geography Quiz β The Continent of Extremes
Asia holds records that no other continent can match. It has the highest mountains, the largest population, the deepest lake and some of the longest rivers on Earth. Its landscapes range from the frozen tundra of Siberia to the rainforests of Borneo, and from the dry Gobi to the monsoon-soaked hills of northeast India, one of the wettest places in the world.
Mountains shape much of the continent. The Himalayas and the Karakoram contain every one of the world's fourteen peaks above 8,000 meters, and the Tibetan Plateau behind them feeds rivers that support billions of people downstream. Farther east, Asia breaks into thousands of islands, from Japan to Indonesia and the Philippines, many of them formed by volcanoes along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
The quiz also covers places where people have changed the map. The Aral Sea, once the fourth-largest lake in the world, shrank after its rivers were diverted to grow cotton, and it is now a famous example of an environmental disaster.
You will find a mix of easy and harder questions. Most players know Mount Fuji, but fewer know where the world's largest cave was discovered or which country lies on the other side of K2.
Asia is also a continent of great river civilizations. Early cities grew along the Indus in Pakistan, the Yellow River in China and the Tigris and Euphrates in Mesopotamia. Today the Ganges, the Mekong and the Yangtze still feed hundreds of millions of people and carry boats, rice and trade between inland towns and the coast.
