Art History Quiz – Masterpieces and the People Who Made Them
Art history tells the story of humanity through paintings, sculptures and buildings. From cave paintings made tens of thousands of years ago to the works hanging in today's museums, art shows how people saw themselves, their gods and their world. Learning about it makes every museum visit more rewarding.
The Renaissance in Italy, from the 1400s to the 1500s, produced some of the most famous artists of all time. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael studied anatomy, perspective and light to make their works look more real than anything before them. In the Netherlands a century later, painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer captured quiet moments of everyday life with extraordinary skill.
In the 1800s, the Impressionists, led by Claude Monet, broke the rules by painting outdoors with quick, visible brushstrokes. Vincent van Gogh pushed color and emotion even further, though he sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His work, like Edvard Munch's The Scream, helped pave the way for Expressionism.
The twentieth century brought a burst of new movements. Picasso and Braque invented Cubism, Salvador Dalí painted dreamlike Surrealist scenes and Frida Kahlo created deeply personal self-portraits that now inspire artists around the world.
This quiz moves through these periods, asking about artists, paintings and museums, with an explanation for each answer.
Art history is also a story of patrons and places. Popes, kings and wealthy merchants such as the Medici family in Florence paid for many Renaissance masterpieces, while later artists sold their work to collectors, galleries and museums. Where a painting hangs today often tells its own story of wars, thefts and long journeys.
