Ancient Civilizations Quiz – Where History Began

Civilization began when people settled in one place, grew crops and built cities. Some of the earliest civilizations grew up along great rivers: the Tigris and Euphrates in Mesopotamia, the Nile in Egypt, the Indus in South Asia and the Yellow River in China. Rivers provided water, fertile soil and transport, allowing populations to grow.

These early societies invented many things we take for granted. The Sumerians developed cuneiform writing and some of the first laws and schools. The Indus Valley people built planned cities with drainage systems. The Phoenicians spread an alphabet that became the ancestor of Greek and Latin letters.

Across the ocean, civilizations in the Americas developed independently. The Maya created a sophisticated writing system, accurate calendars and great stone cities, while the Aztecs built Tenochtitlan on a lake, with floating gardens and huge temples. In the Mediterranean, the Minoans of Crete and the city-states of Greece laid foundations for European culture.

Archaeology keeps changing the story. Göbekli Tepe in Turkey, built more than 11,000 years ago by hunter-gatherers, showed that people could build great monuments before farming began, overturning long-held ideas about how civilization started.

This quiz covers many of the world's oldest civilizations and their achievements.
