2020s Movies Quiz – The Films Defining a New Decade

The 2020s began with empty cinemas. The COVID-19 pandemic closed theaters around the world in 2020, delayed many big releases and pushed studios to send films straight to streaming. For a while, people wondered whether going to the movies would ever be the same again.

Then audiences came back in force. Top Gun: Maverick became a huge hit in 2022, and in July 2023 the double release of Barbie and Oppenheimer turned into a cultural event known as Barbenheimer, with fans dressing in pink or in suits to see both films on the same day. Both went on to earn hundreds of millions of dollars.

The decade's awards have rewarded bold, original films. Everything Everywhere All at Once, a wild multiverse story, swept the Oscars in 2023, Oppenheimer won in 2024 and Anora, a smaller independent film, won in 2025. Big franchises have kept going too, with Dune, Wicked and Inside Out 2 all drawing large audiences.

The global box office has also changed. Chinese films such as Ne Zha 2 have broken records, and international hits from Korea, India and Japan now reach audiences far beyond their home countries.

This quiz covers the hits, awards and records of the 2020s so far.

Streaming has changed how many people discover films, too. Titles that once would have played for a few weeks in cinemas now find second lives on services such as Netflix, Max and Disney+, and some of the decade's most talked-about films reached most of their viewers at home.
